The Role

The Associate Consultant will be responsible for coordinating and delivering priority programmes within AbacusBio. This role includes project management, stakeholder communication, and operational support, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and in line with client expectations.

Collaborating with senior consultants, the Associate Consultant will act as a point of contact for project teams and clients, facilitating clear communication, managing resources, and maintaining focus on achieving outcomes. The role requires adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and a commitment to learning and development in a dynamic environment.

This position provides the opportunity to work at the intersection of science, business, and strategy, focusing on delivering value to clients in the agricultural, horticultural, forestry, and aquaculture sectors.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Project coordination and management – Assist in planning, tracking, and managing multiple projects to ensure delivery meets client specifications, timelines, and budgets.
  • Client and stakeholder communication – Serve as a key point of contact for clients, supporting clear and effective communication across project teams. The ability to translate scientific or technical concepts into clear, accessible language tailored to diverse audiences, including clients, stakeholders, and farmers.
  • Financial and administrative oversight – Assist with project budgets, including preparing invoices, and tracking expenses. Ensure alignment between budgets, contracts, and client deliverables, flagging any discrepancies or adjustments needed and working collaboratively to resolve them.
  • Technical engagement and learning – Develop a foundational understanding of scientific, genetic, or agricultural concepts relevant to projects. Act as a bridge between technical experts and non-technical stakeholders by breaking down technical concepts and facilitating effective communication.

This role provides the opportunity to work with global clients and collaborate with colleagues across our offices in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, contributing to internationally impactful projects.

Attributes

The ideal candidate will be an organised and detail-oriented individual capable of managing competing priorities. Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset are essential for teamwork, building relationships, and contributing to an inclusive workplace. Willingness to learn, adapt, and develop new skills, especially in project management, financial reporting, and science communication, is crucial. They should be a strategic thinker with a solutions-focused approach, able to assess challenges, make informed decisions, and align efforts with both client and company goals.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education – A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., agricultural science, genetics, biology, veterinary science, or agribusiness) or equivalent experience.
  • Project management – Experience in managing projects or supporting project teams, with proficiency in tools like Salesforce or project management software.
  • Communication – Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical or scientific concepts into accessible language for diverse audiences.

  • Technical knowledge – A foundational understanding of agricultural, genetic, or scientific concepts is a strong asset, but a willingness to learn and actively engage with technical material on the job is essential, as the role involves bridging technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Financial management – Familiarity with financial processes, including budgeting, invoicing, and reporting, is not essential but highly desirable.
  • Growth mindset – A proactive approach to learning new tools, processes, and systems, with an openness to developing expertise in project management and science communication.

This role may require occasional travel to meet with clients, attend workshops, or collaborate with colleagues across our global offices. Travel will provide opportunities to engage directly with stakeholders, contribute to high-impact projects, and build strong international relationships.
