Claire Payne, PhD

Consultant

Claire has a strong background in meat science with a focus on eating quality and on-farm solutions to improve product consistency and quality.

Claire has extensive experience in the Australian sheep industry, previously working within pasture and genetics research at a large State Departmental Research Facility. She has also had a go at sheep farming herself during a 3-year farm lease, running a small commercial and stud breeding program.

Claire’s past research has directly contributed to the development of the Meat Standards Australia Sheepmeat quality grading model and early preparation of producers for its implementation. Her work has also contributed to the development of Australian Sheep Breeding Values for carcase and production traits, and building resilient forage systems for livestock production.

Claire is passionate about communicating with industry and using science to inform solutions that drive value through the supply chain. Claire is very excited to continue this with AbacusBio.

Claire is known for her competitiveness nature and wide collection of hobbies. In her downtime you’ll find her playing sport (any and all), going to gigs, playing her ukulele (badly), ramming kids off the go-kart track, at the beach, or yelling (crying) at the West Coast Eagles on the TV.
