Freddy Fikse, PhD

Freddy joined AbacusBio in 2025 and is currently involved in projects on genetic evaluation of dairy cattle. Freddy specialises in genetic evaluation of cattle and past experience also include other species like swine, horses and dogs. Driven to deliver scientifically sound solutions, he takes a broad perspective in tackling genetic evaluation questions, ranging from collection of phenotypes, data processing to communication with farmers, breeding organizations and other stakeholders. Freddy’s past experience also includes breeding planning, including breeding program design, mating strategies and breeding goal definition.

While employed at a Swedish farmer co-operative, Freddy was actively involved in the development of Nordic genetic evaluation and selection index for beef bulls used on dairy cows. He was also frequently engaged to present at industry and farmer meetings. Freddy started his professional career at the Interbull Centre, working on genetic evaluation of cattle. During this time, Interbull’s service portfolio expanded considerably to include economically important functional traits like reproduction, health and longevity. Over the years Freddy has had the privilege to be advisor of more than 35 graduate students

Freddy is driven by supporting farmers and breeding organizations to make well-informed decisions that promote sustainable food production. He can enjoy the nitty-gritty details of advanced genetic analyses, while maintaining focus on how the outcomes translate into practical use at farms, breeding organizations and among other stakeholders.

Outside work, music plays an important role for Freddy. He sings in a chamber choir and occasionally in smaller ensembles. When the opportunity arises, he also likes to play the organ. Freddy has a broad taste in music and also enjoys going to the opera, musicals, and concerts.
