We are looking for a Consultant – Livestock Geneticist to join our team. This role will suit someone with strong technical expertise and a passion for applying science to real-world agricultural systems.
About the role
This is an opportunity to work at the interface of science and industry, contributing to livestock production and farm systems projects across Australia, New Zealand, and globally. You will apply your expertise to deliver practical, results-focused insights that improve client outcomes.

What you’ll do
- Handling, processing, and interpretation of datasets associated with animal performance and pedigree (including DNA/genotype information).
- Genetic/genomic evaluation model design, testing, and validation, and analysis of research and commercial animal datasets for breeding value estimation. Work will span combinations of industry-scale clients through to small private evaluation clients across beef, sheep and dairy industries.
- Contribute expertise to teams delivering projects focusing on wider livestock breeding and genetics across opportunities spanning breeding objective and selection index development, breeding programme design, simulation modelling, impact assessments, and breeding program advisory support.
- Present and communicate genetic evaluation and genetic improvement concepts and advice to clients across both technical and industry domains.
- Contribute to wider on-farm and farm systems modelling projects that will leverage livestock genetics expertise to analyse economic, environmental and production outcomes across broad farm and industry contexts.
- Monitor and manage timely and accurate delivery of projects to clients and support the development of internal systems that do the same.
- Participate in third party conferences, workshops, and meetings to advance knowledge.
- Leverage existing network and build a broader network in the livestock genetics and evaluation space to the benefit of AbacusBio and our clients.
What you’ll bring
- Post doctoral experience in quantitative genetics with a very good component of genomic methodologies
- A minimum of 3 years’ work experience in livestock genetics with preference for experience in Australian or New Zealand beef, sheep or dairy sectors.
- Experience with genetic and genomic evaluations
- Experience in estimating genetic parameters
- Excellent numerical and statistical skills
- Coding to best-practice standard, including knowing how to use AI efficiently to support coding
- Large data handling experience
- Programming experience and the ability to learn new languages
- Good communication skills
- Good analytical/problem solving skills
- A team player
- Attention to detail
- A willingness to undertake international travel
- Ability and desire to work in a commercial environment is essential
- Must be eligible to work in Australia.
